JUDAISM AND DEMOCRACY
The EDRS Israel Group hosted a talk on 28th November by Israeli Rabbi Nava Hefetz who is the Educational Director of Rabbis for Human Rights. This organisation has a membership of over 100 rabbis and rabbinical students from all sections of Judaism within Israel.
Rabbi Hefetz explained that the organisation acts as a shofar to warn the people of Israel about issues concerning the Human Rights of all its citizens. Human Rights covers a range of issues and takes as its basis the Declaration of the State of Israel. By analysing each paragraph in the Declaration in the same way as the Mishna it focuses on core values. For example, it looks at women’s rights in the ultra-orthodox community as well as the Moslem community within Israel.
The organisation runs a number of educational programmes for young people about to enter the IDF to encourage them to think about the rights of individuals.
The talk was followed by a lively question and answer session.
