Our New President - Keith Price
When my late parents joined EDRS, I was immediately thrust into the preparation for my Barmitzvah, set for July 1960. It was that experience that established my path within Reform Judaism, a path upon which I have travelled ever since.
I literally sat at the feet of EDRS’ first minister, Rabbi Dr Ignaz Maybaum z’l, learning from his wisdom and being inspired. The motivation to continue upon my own Jewish journey came from my other teacher, and perhaps mentor, Rabbi Dow Marmur. He was Head Teacher at EDRS whilst a student at Leo Baeck College and challenged his own students to question all that we read and heard with a view to developing our own understanding of Progressive Judaism. I was very fortunate that the Shabbat following his Semicha, he officiated with Rabbi Maybaum at my Barmitzvah. Those are indelible memories.
So began my being an integral part of the life of EDRS and EDRS being an integral part of my life. My journey took me to the youth clubs, to welcoming our then new Rabbi, Rabbi Dr Michael Leigh z’l, to being a warden and services lay leader, to so many different committees and working parties over the years and then to being Chairman in 1991. In that capacity, I was privileged to oversee Rabbi Leigh’s retirement and Rabbi Danny Smith’s arrival as his successor.
