The JC Mensch of the Year Award 2015
One of the worthy recipients of this award is Sam Baumal, who is 18 years old and works as a teaching assistant in Orot our cheder. Sam was nominated for this award by Marian Cohen the Director of Education because his kindness and patience endears him to his students and other staff members. Sam says he is motivated “by the desire to help young people to progress and grow in terms of their Jewish studies and Hebrew reading.”
But more than just the work Sam does here at EDRS he also gives up a considerable amount of his free time during the year to train to look after a severely disabled young adult. Last summer Sam became a supporter of his school’s Phab Week, where sixth formers run a holiday camp at the school for 20 disabled teenagers. Sam says “its and incredible opportunity to help give a young person an amazing week that they will never forget, full of fun, friendship and new experiences. It’s also a great opportunity to allow the carers and parents of our guests to take a break.”
Sam is studying hard for his A levels and hopes to go to Durham University to read sciences; we will certainly miss him at Orot but we hope that we will see Sam in the future using his immense leadership and empathy skills to play a leading role at EDRS.
Mazel Tov Sam, you deserve the title.
